Azores Itinerary 5 Days: One Island, Done Properly

The three-arched city gates are the classic first photo and the old town spreads behind them toward the marina. Both are open-air public monuments with no hours or tickets. Two official information desks anchor the day: the airport post at João Paulo II, phone +351 296 284 569, and the city desk on Avenida Infante D. Henrique, phone +351 296 308 610.

The desks serve all of São Miguel, so they can confirm current hours and the Fogo road status before you drive into it. What goes wrong: people expect an airport bus timetable at the desk. No official route number, price or schedule could be verified, so ask on the spot.

The municipal market has traded on Rua do Mercado since 1848 and it is a working market first and a visitor sight second. Hours: Monday to Wednesday 07:30-18:30, Thursday 07:30-19:00, Friday 07:00-19:00, Saturday 07:00-14:00, Sunday closed. On public holidays it opens 07:00-14:00 only if the holiday falls on a Friday or Saturday, otherwise it shuts.

In Fajã de Baixo on the town's edge, this working greenhouse grows the PGI Ananás dos Açores fruit that only exists on São Miguel. Visits are free and walk the whole growth cycle, from planting to fruit under glass, ending in a gift shop with a free tasting of the house pineapple liqueur. There is a kiosk doing juice, cake and cocktails.

Hours run every day, April to September 09:00-20:00, October 09:00-19:00, November to March 09:00-18:00, so it survives a late landing. What goes wrong: people leave it to the last morning and rush it. It belongs on a soft first day, and it pairs naturally with the evening pool booking.

End day 1 in the iron-rich water. Four thermal pools at around 39°C, open every day 08:30-23:00 with last entry 21:30. Tickets are sold online only, entry is by order of arrival, and the ticket buys a maximum stay of 1h30.

The evening rate from 18:00 is $18.34 (€16), worth it after dark. Bring dark swimwear, the ferrous water stains light fabric and hair, and a swim cap is recommended rather than required, sold on site for €1. Towel rental is $4.58 (€4) plus a $22.92 (€20) cash deposit.

What goes wrong: people turn up without an online booking and without cash for deposits.

This is the classic framed view over the green and blue lakes, and it carries a royal name: King D. Carlos and Queen D. Amélia visited in 1901 and the viewpoint keeps their title. It is also the trailhead of PR03SMI, the easy linear 6 km walk down to the village, about 2 hours on a clear line from rim to lake. Go early because cloud fills the crater from late morning more often than rain does, and the view is the entire point.

What goes wrong: people drive up for the view, find it socked in, and drive off without a plan B. Wait a little or drop to the village level, which often sits below the cloud line.

Down in the crater the village sits between the two arms of the lake, and the Complexo Ambiental visitor centre is free with an exhibition and documentary screening. Mind the calendar: from 1 November to 31 March it opens Monday to Friday only, 09:00-12:30 and 13:30-17:00, closed weekends, then daily from 1 April. Kayaking is the common add-on and the common mistake: the centre offers no watersports at all, any kayak offer is a private tour operator, never an official service.

If you want paddling, book the private rental in advance and expect it to run from the shore, not from the centre.

If the rim walk is done or the crater crowd thins your patience, this is the quiet alternative. Serra Devassa is an easy 4.2 km circular trail of about 2 hours starting and finishing near the Mata do Canário forest park, by Lagoa do Canário, so it stacks naturally onto the PR04SMI approach road. It passes a chain of small lakes and ridge views across the massif rather than the headline twin-lake shot.

No permit, no fee, no booking. What goes wrong: weather swings fast on the ridge, so carry a shell even on a blue morning, and keep winter starts early.

The wildest lake on the island, a full crater with no buildings on its shore. The rule that decides your day: during the official shuttle season, 1 August to 30 September 2026, the road between Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água is closed to private vehicles. Only tour operators, taxis and residents may drive it.

The hop-on hop-off shuttle runs 09:00-20:00 daily on two lines of about 60 minutes each, costs $9.17 (€8) for adults and $4.58 (€4) for children 7 to 12 and seniors, bought on the bus, with hop-off pauses of 3 to 10 minutes. Outside the season the restriction lifts, but re-check, the shuttle returns for Easter 2027 school holidays. Parking is the quiet constraint: the official count is about 200 spaces for the whole road, 101 at the Caldeira Velha lot, 60 at Casa da Água, and the 48 at the miradouro are reserved for tour operators, taxis and residents, so arriving late in season means the shuttle regardless.

The complete ticket is $11.46 (€10) for adults, and it is timed: 1h30 entry blocks running through the day, with summer hours 09:00-20:30 from 1 May to 30 September. Only 100 bathers are allowed in the pools at once, and during the shuttle season entry requires a prior reservation, so book online before you arrive.

What goes wrong: people roll up mid-afternoon in shuttle season with no reservation and find the blocks sold, then discover the later blocks vanish first because everyone wants the warm slot. Take the first block you can, then ride the shuttle up the mountain after.

Finish the day in the north coast's main city, which costs nothing to walk. The practical add-on is the PRC29SMI Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande to Salto do Cabrito trail, a short route whose start lies about 2 km from the shuttle's Caldeira Velha stop, ending at a waterfall. Note the paperwork point: this is officially a Ribeira Grande trail, not a Lagoa do Fogo trail, even though shuttle marketing lists it as a stop.

The fumarole fields on the lake shore are the reason Furnas exists where it does, a patch of secondary volcanism boiling out of the ground. They sit on the PRC06SMI Lagoa das Furnas trail, an easy 9.5 km circular of about 3 hours, and you can reach the steaming ground from the lake road without walking the full loop. One honesty note: no official source publishes the cozido cooking figures, the oft-quoted buried 6 to 7 hours circulates only on media sites, so treat it as colour, not fact.

Watch your step, the ground is soft and hot exactly where it looks inviting.

The stew slow-cooked by volcanic heat is Furnas on a plate, and every restaurant in the village serves its version at lunch. No official price list exists anywhere in Portugal for restaurant meals, so budget on the day and expect it to be the day's main food spend. It is a heavy meat-and-vegetable pot, arrive hungry, and in the high season a booked table is the safer plan.

What goes wrong: people eat the full cozido and then try to swim in Terra Nostra's 38 to 42 degree water immediately after. Reverse the order or give yourself a lazy hour between the two, your body will thank you. More in the Azores food guide.

The garden and its great iron-orange thermal tank are the valley's centrepiece. Open every day 10:30-16:30, adults $19.48 (€17). The critical rule: online availability is released only 15 days ahead and the ticket is dated, so set a reminder for exactly 15 days before your Furnas day.

Inside, the tank holds a maximum of 100 people, jacuzzis 10, and a 30-minute bathing cap applies, with showering mandatory before and after. Wear dark swimwear, the iron water stains light fabric and can discolour hair and nails, and no swim cap is required. What goes wrong: arriving at 16:00 hoping to slip in, entry stops 30 minutes before closing.

If day 1 skipped the evening soak, or you simply want it twice, Furnas is its natural home. Open to 23:00 with last entry 21:30, and the evening ticket from 18:00 costs $18.34 (€16) against $13.75 (€12) earlier. Same rules as before: online only, 1h30 maximum, entry by arrival order, four pools at around 39°C. Doing Terra Nostra by day and Dona Beija by night is the classic Furnas double and it works because the two feel nothing alike, garden tank versus the smaller evening pools.

Book both before dinner, then walk into town and let the stew settle first.

Europe's oldest tea plantation, producing since 1883 and now in its fifth family generation. Visits and tastings are free with no reservation needed: you walk a self-guided circuit through the withering, rolling, oxidation, drying and packing rooms, then the museum, shop and tea bar. Opening hours are not published on the official site, which is the one planning gap, so treat it as a daytime stop and phone ahead if timing matters.

What goes wrong: visitors expect a guided tour with a start time. There is none, you wander, and if the machines are off the museum still explains the line. The fields themselves are the walk.

The island's wild east end, where the cliffs run green to the sea. Three named viewpoints carry no fee, like everywhere in the parks network: Miradouro de Santa Iria on the north coast looking over Ponta do Cintrão and the ruins of an old spa, Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego above the water, and Miradouro da Tronqueira toward the Pico da Vara massif. String them together in an afternoon with the Ribeira dos Caldeirões park in between, which is always open and free.

What goes wrong: fog. The east generates its own cloud, so if Santa Iria is white, drop to the coast road and try the next one.

The Azores are one of the world's largest whale sanctuaries and watching runs year-round, with sightings on 98 percent of trips. More than 20 cetacean species pass through, sperm whales in summer, blue whales late in winter, common and bottlenose dolphins all year. The three-hour trip from Ponta Delgada costs $80.35 and holds a 4.6 rating over 5,258 reviews, so it slots into a morning or afternoon with hours to spare.

What goes wrong: sea state cancels departures, sometimes at short notice. Book it for the start of day 5 so a cancellation can be rebooked the same day, and take the motion tablets they offer even if you never need them.

Fly into Horta and start at the marina, where yacht crews have painted portraits on the walls since the harbour opened in 1986. Peter Café Sport, trading for over a century at Rua José Azevedo, is the sailors' bar of the mid-Atlantic, open Monday to Saturday 09:00-24:00 and Sunday 10:00-24:00. Upstairs the Scrimshaw Museum charges $4.01 (€3.50) and shows whale-tooth engravings from the whaling era, open mornings and split afternoons Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays, so time the flight accordingly.

Then drive out to the Capelinhos volcano, which erupted between 1957 and 1958, the Azores' most recent eruption, and left a grey lunar coast you can walk.

A short hop from Faial puts you on Pico, where the vineyard landscape has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. The point is the currais: small squares walled in black basalt that shelter vines from wind and salt on bare lava, with Criação Velha the best place to walk among them beside the sea. No entrance fee is published for walking the vineyard paths, and the wine museum's hours are not officially listed, so treat the afternoon as a self-guided walk among the walls.
