Sete Cidades or Lagoa do Fogo: São Miguel's Two Lake Days Compared

Start with the fact that reshapes this decision in 2026. During the official shuttle season, the road between Caldeira Velha on the north coast and Casa da Água above Lagoa do Fogo is closed to private visitors' vehicles. Only tour operators, travel agencies, taxis and residents may drive it and use the en-route car parks. The Shuttle Vulcão do Fogo runs from 1 Aug to 30 Sep 2026, daily from 09:00 to 20:00 including holidays.

The shuttle itself is a hop-on, hop-off service with two lines of roughly 60 minutes each. The Red Line runs Caldeira Velha to Miradouro da Bela Vista, Pico da Barrosa, the Lagoa do Fogo miradouro and back. The Green Line runs the same ridge from Casa da Água on the south side. Hop-off pauses are short, 3 to 10 minutes per stop, and tickets are bought on the bus.

Parking is the quieter part of the same policy. The official lots hold about 200 spaces in total: 101 at Caldeira Velha, 60 at Casa da Água, and just 48 at the miradouro itself, reserved for tour operators, agencies, taxis and residents. In shuttle season you cannot simply drive up and park at the top.

Sete Cidades has none of this. Its viewpoints sit on normal public roads that stay open all year, which is why the two lake days feel completely different to plan. Details of the shuttle regime, line by line, sit in our Lagoa do Fogo directions section.

Sete Cidades is the free lake day. No fee appears anywhere on the parks network for its viewpoints or marked trails, and the Complexo Ambiental visitor centre is free too. What costs money is time on the water or a guided day: an hour of double kayak on the Blue Lake is $22.96, the 8-hour west van tour with lunch is $97.57, and a private 4-hour SUV tour is $343.22.

Lagoa do Fogo is free at the viewpoint but the road costs you in shuttle season. The adult shuttle fare is $9.17 (€8), with children 7 to 12 and seniors 65+ at $4.58 (€4), under-6s and all Azores residents free. Guided days there run from $55.10 for a biologist-led 4-hour trip that ends in a soak at Caldeira Velha or the Salto do Cabrito waterfall, to $91.83 for a full-day loop that also takes in Sete Cidades.

That last figure points at the honest answer to the either-or. One highly rated 8-hour tour covers both lakes in a single day for $97.57, lunch included, and it hands the restricted road problem to a licensed operator. If you cannot choose and you have no car, that is the third option hiding inside the question.

Sete Cidades sells the most reproduced view in the Azores. The Lagoa das Sete Cidades is counted among the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal, and the classic frame comes from the Miradouro da Vista do Rei, named for the visit of King D. Carlos and Queen D. Amélia on 6 July 1901. Three official trails cross the area: the easy 6 km Vista do Rei descent to the village takes about 2 hours, the Mata do Canário line runs 11 km in about 3, and the Serra Devassa loop covers 4.2 km in about 2. The free visitor centre screens a documentary and runs 1 Apr to 31 Oct daily, but drops weekends from November to March.

Lagoa do Fogo is the wilder product. The name means Lake of Fire, the crater sits high in the centre of the island, and the miradouro looks down on a pale sand strip at the water's edge. The official circuit, PRC02SMI from Praia, runs 12 km and about 4 hours at medium difficulty. What nobody publishes is a swimming rule: no page on the parks network, the tourism portal or Visit Azores states either a ban or permission, so the honest line is that the water is unregulated as far as official sources go.

For a first visit, Sete Cidades. The view is the island's signature, the access is unconditional, and a free morning there leaves budget and hours for everything else. It is also the easier call with children or a mixed group, because the viewpoints sit beside the road and the descent to the village turns the same panorama into a walk.

Lagoa do Fogo earns the day when you have already seen the postcard or you want the island's wilder face. The crater feels remote in a way Sete Cidades does not, the 12 km circuit is a serious half-day walk, and the shuttle, whatever it costs in spontaneity, rides each line in loops of roughly 60 minutes and delivers you to a view most visitors still miss. In shuttle season, a car does not help you there, which removes the usual argument for self-driving.
