Capelinhos Volcano: The Eruption That Built New Land

Between 1957 and 1958 the eruption off the west end of Faial tossed grey volcanic ash and lapilli over the coast, and Visit Azores calls the Capelinhos volcano the witness to the last volcanic eruption that took place in the Azores. That wording is worth holding on to, because it is all the official record gives. No official page in this site's packs prints the day the eruption began, so the honest sentence is that it ran across 1957 and 1958 and left the landscape behind.

The outcome is easy to describe in plain words. A submarine vent built new land where the sea had been, ash and lapilli piled over the ground until the old lighthouse stood half swallowed, and the grey terrain never went back to green in quite the same way. The old lighthouse tower survived, and it is today home to the Interpretation Centre, featuring what Visit Azores calls the most advanced multimedia.

The site sits at the far end of faial, past the caldera, where the road simply runs out at the newest ground in the archipelago.

This is the tower that gives the site its image. The eruption's ash rose around it until only the upper part stood clear, and that half buried shell is now the centre's building. That makes the museum an exhibit in itself: you enter the very structure the eruption tried to swallow, and the interpretation inside is set within the ruin it documents.

Walk around the outside first and read the tower from the coast path, because from the badlands you see exactly how high the ash reached and how the rest of the keepers' world disappeared underneath it. It is the single most photographed object on the island's west end, and it earns that.

The ash badlands and the coastal viewpoints

The grey terrain is free and open ground. There are no hours and no ticket, so you can walk out over the eruption coast at any time of day and see the cliff-edge paths drop toward the new land the vent built. The surface is ash and lapilli, pale and loose, and it contrasts hard with the green pasture behind it.

One caveat belongs here: no pack in this site's research publishes a trail inventory for the site, so no named path list or distances can be given. Treat the ground as an open landscape to wander with care near the edges, wear shoes that cope with loose grit, and keep back from the cliff line in wind.

The Interpretation Centre

Inside the tower, the centre runs multimedia on the eruption and on how the archipelago itself was formed, which Visit Azores describes as the most advanced multimedia of its kind in the region. This is the only ticketed part of the site, and the winter hours are published: 1 Nov to 31 Mar, Tuesday to Saturday 09:00 to 17:00, closed Mondays and Sundays. The entry price is the one thing nobody official will confirm, so bring a payment card and expect to pay at the door.

On a closed day the tower is shut but the landscape outside still does its work.

The practical read for a closed day: the terrain outside never closes and never charges, so a visit that arrives on a Monday or a Sunday still sees the whole eruption landscape and loses only the indoor exhibit.

The site sits at the far west end of Faial island, and Horta is the arrival point for almost everyone. You reach Horta by HOR flight from Boston, Toronto and Montreal with Azores Airlines and SATA Air Açores, or by the Atlânticoline ferry, whose static crossing times and fares are not published anywhere on its site, only through its dynamic booking tool. From Horta, no official page publishes a driving time to Capelinhos, so no minutes figure belongs here.

Start from the viewpoint, which costs nothing and delivers the image of the half buried tower. Add the Interpretation Centre if the tower is open and you want the eruption explained. Then lengthen the stay with the ash trails and the coast road back toward Horta, or hand the whole island day to the guided run that takes in the Caldeira as well.
