Terra Nostra Garden, Furnas: The Iron Pool, The Garden And The Rules

Parque Terra Nostra is a historic garden in Furnas, and its own site brands it exactly that way. The adjacent hotel carries the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel brand, which is why searches for the garden frequently turn up hotel pages and the other way around. This page is about the park. The hotel is a separate business that shares the name and, conveniently for its guests, offers unlimited 24-hour access to the park and its pools.

A centuries-old origin story for the garden circulates widely online. The official site publishes no dated history section that this guide could verify, so no founding year is printed here. That is a negative finding, not a claim that the garden is new. If the history matters to you, the physical signage in the park carries more detail than the official website.

What the official water page does document is the centre of the park: the thermal tank. It is geothermally heated to 38-42°C and its famous orange colour comes from iron and other dissolved minerals, listed as calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, iron and silica. The setting is the Furnas volcanic valley, covered in the Furnas guide. A domain note that saves someone a broken link: the park's old web address terranostragarden.pt is dead, and every deep link ever published to it 404s. The live official domain is parqueterranostra.com, and it brands the park Parque Terra Nostra, not Terra Nostra Garden.

The iron thermal tank

The tank is the reason most people come. The water is geothermally heated and sits at 38-42°C year round, coloured orange by iron and other dissolved minerals. Capacity is capped at 100 bathers, and each stay is limited to a maximum of 30 minutes.

A shower before and after bathing is mandatory, and jumping or diving is not allowed. The water also stains: dark swimwear is advised because light fabrics can be permanently marked, and hair and nails can discolour. Because the cap applies to everyone at once, the tank can fill up in the middle of a busy afternoon, so go early or late if you want an easy slot.

The jacuzzis

Beside the main tank sit jacuzzis with their own limit: a maximum of 10 people each. The same 30-minute stay cap applies as in the tank, and the same shower rule applies before and after. Ten is a small number compared with the 100 allowed in the main pool, so the jacuzzis are the first thing to fill when the park gets busy.

Treat them as a bonus rather than a plan. If they are full when you arrive, a rotation strategy works well, since the 30-minute cap in the tank means bathers cycle out regularly and free up space elsewhere.

The garden and its collections

The ticket includes the garden and its fixed and temporary collections, not just the water. The park publishes one walking route, its summer route, described as 3 km and 1h30. That is the only published duration figure for the whole park, and it is a reasonable planning anchor.

The route passes through the plant collections and around the tank, so you can combine walking and bathing in a single visit. Nothing else is stated officially about how long a visit takes, so a garden walk plus a pool session is our estimate of a half-day minimum.

The park opens 10:30-16:30 every day, including Sundays and public holidays, and closes on 25 December. You may enter up to 30 minutes before closing, and everyone heads for the exit in the last 10 minutes. The pool follows the same hours as the garden, so there is no early-morning or evening bathing session here.

There are no time slots inside the park. The session is the date itself: your ticket is valid for a specific date, and you arrive whenever you like within opening hours. What actually controls crowding is the capacity rule. The tank takes 100 bathers and each jacuzzi 10, and those caps bite in the afternoon of a warm high-season day, when waiting for a free place is realistic. The garden paths themselves stay walkable all day, so the wait is a pool problem, not a park problem.

One group holds the exception to the closing time: guests of the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel get unlimited park access, pools included, 24h a day, per the official pool page. Day visitors work inside 10:30-16:30 and that is that.

The address is Largo Marquês da Praia e Monforte, 9675-037 Furnas, São Miguel, and the gate sits in the middle of the village. Parking is the awkward part. The only published statement is that hotel guests are entitled to free parking on the premises. Nothing about day-visitor parking exists on the official site, and no village parking price is published either, so plan to park somewhere in Furnas and walk. GPS coordinates are not printed on the official site either, which offers only a directions link. Furnas is a small valley village and everything you need is within walking distance of the gate.

Two navigation notes the official site leaves open. First, the park prints no GPS coordinates, only a directions link, so the postal address above is what you feed the satnav. The iron in the water is the same reason the tank is orange, and it does not stop at swimwear. At the other Furnas bathing venue the official advice notes that jewellery may also be affected by iron-rich water in this valley, so leave anything you would mind losing the shine on.
